Yaluwa is currently registering as a charity and has the knowledge and support of the main aid organisations of the Disasters Emergency Commitee - and is operated wholly by volunteers
Since
the 26th December 2004, there have been a vast influx of charities and web-sites
set up to try and raise money for the lives and countries which were
destroyed that day and you may be thinking that we are probably no different
to them. You are right if we are talking about the genuine contributions from
people, like ourselves, who gain nothing out of this except for one thing,
to bring some hope and a future back to the survivors of these stricken areas.
Obviously
we can’t repair all the damage done in all the affected areas; but we
don’t intend to. Our objectives are to raise money through our charity
and with these donations, go back out to a Sri-Lanka, a country that is especially
meaningful to us, and restructure what we can with the contributions we have.
We are a non-profitable organisation. We regularly travel to Sri-Lanka and
you can track our progress her at www.Yaluwa.org.je or sign up for our newsletter.
We
don’t intend to import any foreign goods or use any paid workers from
outside the direct areas we are rebuilding; our aim is to purchase all supplies
from Sri-Lanka and take them directly to the areas we have chosen, those off
the tourist trail, and distribute them there.
Our
personal history with Sri-Lanka only goes back 13 years, when 6 of us first
went out there on a journey which is now stuck fast in all of our minds. The
places we visited and the people we met were so unique to us that since then
we have returned numerous times to explore the wonders that this jewel
offered.
Unfortunately,
some of us were there on the 26th December 2004 and since then our lives have
changed, bearing in mind though, that WE are the fortunate ones. Many families
in the worst affected areas, however, are still in need of urgent help, their
situation hasn’t changed much since that day…still living in tents
without electricity, running water, any belongings…in the monsoon season.
We hope, that even if you have already contributed to those affected since the tsunami that you might also consider leaving something, no matter how small, here with us, with the knowledge that it will be reaching those who need it…….NOW.
Thanks for listening!
